Introduction:

CoolIT Systems is relatively new to the computer cooling industry but they are no slouch when it comes to making high performance coolers. Back in December of 2006 we took a look at their 'Eliminator' Chiller that relied on three TECs to cool the water and provide exception performance. Since then we've looked at the first generation Freezone and their MTEC Control Center which added a whole new level of control to the cooling system.

Today we are looking at the latest iteration of their 'mainstream enthusiast' coolers as we look at the brand-spanking new Freezone Elite. This new coolers comes in a sexy black finish and ships with the MTEC control center in the box. We'll find out if this cooler is up to the task of chilling our Q6600 and see if it can run this B3 Revision chip stable at high speeds.

About CoolIT:

If you're not familiar with CoolIT, they are a company with headquarters in Calgary, Alberta Canada and claim to be 'the new standard for cooling computers.' Below is a bit more about the company as taken from their site.

For transferring heat, liquid is better, period. The only thing better than liquid is chilled liquid. CoolIT products do not use a radiator, but rather a patented technology called MTEC. By using MTEC technology, the liquid is actually refrigerated (using multiple TECs or Peltiers) then used to cool even the hottest processors in today’s computing devices. The result is unparalleled overclockability, reduced system level noise and increased reliability. In addition to providing superior performance to water cooling, the CoolIT products are pre-plumbed, factory sealed and maintenance free allowing for very simple installation and worry-free.

As technology changes to keep pace with the needs of gamers and today’s computationally intensive applications, computers are running hotter and hotter. And until now, cooling solutions have failed to meet the ever-increasing demand placed on computers, which means PC users aren’t getting the most from their machines.

Since traditional cooling hardware cannot adequately cool processors, chip manufacturers have had to integrate thermal protection circuitry that slows down the processor when it becomes too hot. This hardware is noisy, predisposed to breaking down, and requires a lot of space to provide air flow. More elaborate solutions such as water cooling kits can do a better job of removing heat, but require complex installation and are often less than reliable due to poor design.

In The Box:

Inside the sleek attractive box you find everything nicely nestled into a Styrofoam box. This is a huge improvement over the original layered packaging of the original Freezone and Eliminator and you can actually put this back in the box if you so desire. The first two coolers we got were a little difficult to repackage for shipping and I'm glad to see that this will be easier.

In The Box

The heart and soul of this package is the Freezone Elite and MTEC control center, but there is more to it than that. There is also some mounting hardware that covers AMD Socket AM2 and Intel Socket 775 installations. Officially, this cooler is only for these two platforms, but you may have success on some Socket 939 motherboards although they are not officially supported.

MTEC Hardware

Also included in the box are a couple of short manuals/information sheets regarding the Freezone and the MTEC. A software CD is also included with the latest drivers and software to control the METC unit and the Freezone Elite. At the time of our testing, there was an updated firmware available for the MTEC even though the Freezone Elite is pretty much brand new. This is nice to see that CoolIT is updating their software regularly.

On the next page we'll take a closer look at the Freezone Elite and the MTEC before we strap on this cooler and do some testing.
